With the major overhaul of the Rules coming into effect in 2019 there has never been a better time to organise an event so your members are completely up to speed with all the changes.
I turned professional in 1992, qualifying as a PGA professional in 1995 and earning a Titleist & Footjoy scholarship for my performance in my final exams. I was awarded PGA Advanced Professional status and in early 2018 I was upgraded to PGA Fellow Professional.
13 years ago I attended a PGA course on the Rules of Golf through the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme. Interest piqued, this led to a 2 day course at The Belfry and my exam result led to me being asked to join the PGA Rules Panel. The Panel consists of around 25 pros who assist the PGA Tournament Department in running the many tournaments held during the year. This is done on a part-time basis in addition to ‘day jobs’.
In 2011 I was selected to attend the Tournament Administration and Rules (TARS) course run by the R&A at St Andrews, and achieved a Distinction (94%) grade in the exam, which opened new doors for refereeing opportunities, and the following year fulfilled my ambition to referee my first European Tour event, the Wales Open at Celtic Manor. In 2015 I was asked to be Tournament Director for the PGA Europro Tour (PGAEPT) event at Montrose Golf Links, and this led to me being appointed as Tournament Director for the whole 2017 PGAEPT season. I am currently in my fourth year in this role. I am also refereeing with the Mena Tour in the Middle East during the winter. In May 2019 I was selected to referee at the USPGA Championship at the famous Bethpage Black course near New York.
I have for many years been interested in passing on my knowledge of the Rules to local clubs and have delivered a number of Rules Evenings, Quizzes, practical sessions and seminars.
Ash is quite simply the most skilled, professional and talented member of my team. He has already made a massive impact on the company not just financially but the relationship between the players and the PGA Euro Pro Tour has never been so strong and it seems to be getting more positive…
Ash is able to respond to any rules questioning at a moment’s notice with highly intelligent and accurate information and he is completely trusted by the members of the Tour.
Dan Godding - Chief Executive, PGA Europro Tour
Ash came to Nizels in November to give us a presentation on the 2019 Rules changes, and such was its success that we asked him to return and give us another one, which was another great success, with over 60 participants.
The unique aspect of Ash’s presentations is that they enhance the enjoyment of golf at all levels. As well as being very informative regarding the Rules for we weekend hackers, they also provide a fascinating insight into how the same Rules affect the professional golfer, so we can all have an opinion on what we see on our TV screens during the major tournaments.
Ash is particularly adept at finding video clips to illustrate his points and ensure entertaining, amusing and enjoyable presentations and I would wholeheartedly recommend them to all those who are interested in golf.
I have had the pleasure of working with Ash in several events and in recent years, here at Desert Springs for the Europro Tour Championship and European Tour Qualifying School. He is an integral part of the success and infrastructure of staging these major events. Very simply, the fact that he has been selected to referee at this years USPGA Championship at Bethpage is testament to his knowledge, integrity and considerable experience as a first class Tournament Director and Referee. A consummate Professional.

Our very first Rules Evening at The Ageas Bowl, Boundary Lakes Golf Club was presented by Ashley Weller. All of our members had an extremely enjoyable yet informative evening. The feedback from members was fantastic.
‘’What a great evening, loved the way it was presented, informal yet instructional in its delivery’’.
Golf Rules can often be quite laborious & quite overwhelming to be honest, but Ashley presented it in such a way that made Rules Fun to learn particularly learning all about the new 2019 rules. We would have no hesitation in holding it again and perhaps an on course practical session.
Many thanks Ash from all the members and staff at the Ageas Bowl.
Iain Naylor - PGA Professional, Boundary Lakes GC
I was lucky enough to attend one of Ash’s presentations covering the forthcoming changes to the rules of golf. It was a very interesting evening and I definitely learnt a lot. I also came away feeling that I wouldn’t have any issues practically applying the new rules. This is down to Ash - he has a great way of explaining things and gave us practical examples of issues which we all could easily be exposed to on the golf course. I would definitely recommend anyone going to one of Ash’s presentations... you will not be disappointed!
I think all of us amateur golfers know how important it is for us to have a good understanding of the rules. In our matches and competitions we rarely have a qualified referee to turn to for a decision and need to get up to speed with the 2019 changes before they happen. Ash’s Rules Evenings are not only useful and informative but entertaining too. I have attended many of them and keep going back. Great use of videos and diagrams that leaves us with no excuse for getting anything wrong on the course. Thanks Ash - please come back again next year!
A clear, concise, interesting and at times amusing presentation that helps the club golfer sort the wood from the trees. Ash is able to tailor his presentation to the audience and speaks with the authority that his extensive experience has given him. Highly recommended.
I’ve recently enjoyed another golf rules quiz event hosted by Ashley Weller Once again it was most informative and good fun to boot. He managed to entertain and inform a large, rowdy group of ladies. Ash has always been of tremendous help and support on all matters relating to golf, not only his wealth of knowledge about rules, but also his teaching and coaching skills. All done with professionalism and a ready smile.
Whilst I was playing on The Europro Tour in 2016 & 2017, Ash was an excellent Tournament Director. He saw the events from the players perspective and took care of detail. Critically he had a good rapport with the players and made quick and justified decisions when events were affected by weather. By being there at every event he provided consistency and continuity in approach

Ash possesses excellent people management skills & is capable of motivating both individuals & teams of people in achieving their operational goals. Ash is without doubt a seasoned professional who has exceptional knowledge of golf tournament operations & event management and uses this knowledge efficiently and constructively at each event.

Ashley Weller was the Club Professional and Golf Operations Manager at Nizels’ Golf and Country Club for many years. During this time he introduced a number of innovative practical and theoretical ways of helping members with their understanding and application of the rules of golf.
Apart from always being available to help members with tricky on-course dilemmas, Ash also ran many Golf Rules Quizzes using films and multiple-choice questionnaires for both Men’s and Ladies Sections. These were so useful, well planned, brilliantly presented, and highly entertaining, we have continued to ask Ash to run them, not only regularly for all members of the club, but also as part of our match play preparations for various Nizels’ Teams and Squads.
What I like about Ashley’s approach, is that we meet well before the event to establish who is likely to attend and what we want to achieve from the session. It takes a great deal of research and knowledge to entertain, inform and challenge golfers with such a wide range of skills and experience, but Ashley never fails to vary the questions and keep everyone enthralled! On some occasions we have staged situations out on the course and filmed participants’ answers and responses to the dilemmas, which is always highly entertaining!
In short, I would highly recommend Ashley to you, if you were considering running an event which deals with the often baffling and thought-provoking subject of The Rules of Golf. A subject which to many can seem dry and unimaginative, comes to life when explained by someone who has so much knowledge and experience at the highest levels to draw upon.
